Simon Jordan comments on Sheffield Wednesday takeover is actually great for Chansiri - opinion

Simon Jordan has turned heads with some recent comments he’s made about Sheffield Wednesday.

If there’s one thing Sheffield Wednesday fans want right now, more than anything, it’s an owner who shows a bit more strategy.

Nobody can deny the fact that Dejphon Chansiri has put money into the club in the past, and that he had good intentions before.

But his recent running of the club suggests that his best intentions may have dwindled.

Chansiri’s club statements this season and promises to pull any further investment have garnered strong reactions from the footballing world.

But Jordan’s recent comments on Sheffield Wednesday may actually be good news for the controversial Owls owner.

Simon Jordan hints at interest in Sheffield Wednesday takeover

30 Nov 2001: Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan answers questions during a press conference held to announce Trevor Francis being named manager …

Speaking on talkSPORT this week, pundit and former Crystal Palace owner Jordan said:

“In my book, one of the questions I’m asking myself is, if I was to buy another football club, which one would I buy?

“One of the clubs I mentioned was Sheffield Wednesday because it’s got huge potential.

“It’s a huge area, it’s got huge catchment, it’s got a huge support base, it’s a proper football club in a proper area.

“If you wanted to build that football club and embrace the fans, you would be able to achieve it.

“If you wanted to have help with the training ground, you wouldn’t be having local planning permission from the council in London saying you can’t do this because someone somewhere with a telescope can’t see their view.”

Dom Howson plays down potential Simon Jordan takeover at Sheffield Wednesday

But soon after Jordan’s above comments, journalist Dom Howson played down the vague possibility of Jordan taking control of Sheffield Wednesday.

He posted on X:

And Sheffield Wednesday fans have expressed their fears of a potential Jordan takeover at the club in the future.

Why Simon Jordan comments are good news for Dejphon Chansiri

Although Chansiri won’t want any noise about his position at the club, Jordan’s comments do present a glass half empty scenario.

Jordan makes some very good points about the club’s potential, which has long been known to the fans; the catchment area and popularity of the club makes it something of a sleeping giant in the English Football League, and planning permission for new facilities may be easier attained than for a club in London, as Jordan points out.

We’re seeing entrepreneurs turn their attentions to clubs outside of London; Sunderland and West Brom are two recent examples, as well as Burnley and Newcastle United in the Premier League.

So for Chansiri, the kind of publicity that Jordan’s comments gives Sheffield Wednesday, may well put the club in the shop window for potential investors.

It still feels unlikely that Chansiri sells up anytime soon given his firmness in the face of a potential sale, so for fans, outside investment may be their best hope of a better run club.

Chansiri selling a stake of the club and handing a degree of power over to more capable owners may feel like a pipe dream, but surely Chansiri knows by this point that this could be his only shot at redemption.

In the summer, he could back Rohl or bring in a decent replacement if he leaves, and continue to patch over the club’s problems.

But the Owls would still lack a long-term plan.

Chansiri needs more people around him to build a future for Sheffield Wednesday and the longer that the club suffers, the chances of Chansiri realising this will surely, hopefully, increase.

Allowing outside investors to come in at Sheffield Wednesday, which like Jordan says is a club with huge potential, may be the only way out of this current nightmare for both Chansiri and the fans.
