'Big players': Liam Palmer says Sheffield Wednesday duo did something they never usually do v QPR

Two Sheffield Wednesday players have been praised for what they did at QPR.

Sheffield Wednesday came out 2-0 winners as they travelled to Loftus Road at the weekend – their first victory in a month.

The Owls didn’t look to have much luck on their trip south, with Ian Poveda being forced off after only half an hour.

However, his replacement, Djeidi Gassama, went onto put on a brilliant display and bagged himself a goal and an assist, while fellow substitute Anthony Musaba netted the second.

The duo have had their ‘ups and downs’ this season after joining Wednesday in the summer, but they were both standout performers against QPR and have been hailed for doing one thing that they don’t usually do.

Musaba and Gassama are really ‘big players’

Speaking on the Owls Heaven podcast, captain Liam Palmer said: “I think the manager showed real honestly in the meeting after the Middlesbrough game, especially for those two players [Musaba and Gassama], that they are big players for us, they’re players that can come on and affect games and get us up the pitch.

“I think sometimes without the ball they can work a lot harder and they have shown that today, and that’s the reward you get for doing the defensive side. So yeah, happy for them and hopefully that gives them confidence going into the last five games.”

But can they keep it up?

Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama are both in the top two for the most successful dribbles in the Sheffield Wednesday squad, as well as the top five for the most shots.

They are clearly huge attacking threats for the Owls and have, at times, shown that.

However, they need to be more useful off the ball and that may be something that takes time when adapting to life in the Championship.

They certainly looked much more effective in all areas of the pitch at the weekend though, and that played a huge role in claiming all three points for the team.

If the pair can keep playing like they did on Saturday in the remaining five games then they could play a key part in their survival.

Similarly, the likes of Bambo Diaby and Barry Bannan also took their performances to the next level at the weekend, and it really seems like Danny Rohl‘s frustrated comments last week have hit home for his players.

Let’s see if they can keep it up for the next month now, because consistency has often been their issue.
