Popular restaurant severely damaged by fire, sends firefighter to the hospital

A well-known pub and seafood restaurant suffered severe fire damage early Friday morning with three people treated for injuries, police said Saturday.

Authorities responded to DP’s Pub and Seafood Grill on River Drive in Garfield for a report of a fire at 2:35 a.m. Friday morning, Garfield police said Saturday.

The fire was reported to be on the first floor of the restaurant. Officers evacuated two residents from an apartment on the second floor of the building as well as other residents in surrounding buildings.

Area fire departments responded to a second alarm and the fire was under control by 4:06 a.m., police said.

One firefighter was taken to Hackensack University Hospital for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, according to police. The two residents living above the restaurant were treated for smoke inhalation by EMS at the scene and released, authorities said.

The building suffered extensive damage and the people living in the apartment upstairs were temporarily relocated, police said.

“DP’s has been a local favorite pub for over 50 years,” the restaurant notes on its website.

Police did not say what caused the fire, and the chief for the volunteer fire department did not immediately respond to a message with questions.

“There are none better nor braver than ourGarfield firefighters, along with our police officers and other first responders,” a message posted on the tavern’s Facebook page after the fire said. “We thank them immensely.”

A representative from the restaurant did not immediately return a message with a request for comment Saturday.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make it back, so hope to see you soon,” the post added.
