Chelsea should make signing £28m striker a priority, he's on par with Erling Haaland this season - opinion

Chelsea’s first-choice striker right now is Nicolas Jackson, who has not done too badly in blue this season.

In 35 appearances, Nicolas Jackson has scored 12 goals. It is not the worst record, but is it enough to get Chelsea back into the Champions League and winning trophies again?

If it were, then the Blues would not be in the market for a new centre-forward. It has been reported, for example, that they are waiting for a few things to be clarified before making a serious move for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

It makes sense, as Osimhen is a top striker. But as well as the 25-year-old, Chelsea should also be considering another No.9, one who has actually rivalled Manchester City star Erling Haaland this season.

Erling Haaland remains the benchmark

Haaland is not having the kind of campaign that he had last term, but the Norwegian has still been excellent.

In 26 Premier League appearances, he has scored 20 goals. After a day to forget for Liverpool and Arsenal yesterday, many people will now be backing Haaland to fire City to another title, if they were not already.

Ultimately, the former Borussia Dortmund man is the player every striker should be looking at.

He is an absolute monster, though, and no one else will probably get to his level. However, in terms of output this season, one Premier League centre-forward is literally just behind him.

Chelsea should consider signing Ollie Watkins

Following his well-taken chip against Arsenal yesterday, Ollie Watkins has now scored 19 goals in the Premier League for Aston Villa this season.

That leaves him just one behind Haaland, while the 28-year-old has also recorded 10 assists.

Villa paid Brentford an initial £28m fee to sign Watkins back in 2020. They will probably want triple that to sell him this summer.

But if Chelsea are willing to spend more than that on midfielders, then they should have no problem splashing out on a striker who is actually going to win them games.
