'Absolutely fantastic': Shay Given loved what 'brilliant' Crystal Palace 'leader' did against Liverpool

Crystal Palace had the last laugh on Merseyside on Sunday afternoon, beating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield with one of Oliver Glasner’s stars standing out from the rest.

It would be difficult to pinpoint who the best player was during Crystal Palace’s victory over Liverpool on Sunday, with a host of candidates viable when it comes to selecting the man of the match.

Oliver Glasner earned his first Premier League away win at Anfield, achieving something that no manager has been able to do this season, as the Eagles became the first side to overcome Liverpool at home in the league this term.

A first-half goal from Eberechi Eze was all it took for Palace to take three points back to South London, with the Englishman’s goal protected by some heroic defending courtesy of his teammates.

As a result, captain on the day, Joachim Andersen was crowned as Sky Sports’ man of the match by Jamie Carragher, with the pundit not the only footballing figure to laud the centre-back’s display against the Reds.

Shay Given spoke highly of Joachim Andersen in Crystal Palace’s win over Liverpool

When picking apart the fixture on BBC Match of the Day, pundit and former Premier League ace Shay Given had a lot to say about Andersen’s commanding performance at the back against Liverpool.

“This is your leader, your captain, he was brilliant.”

“Andersen is your captain and your leader, organising in front of him.”

“He was picking up really good positions in the goal and again, when you’ve got someone at the back, talking, demanding, moving people around, absolutely fantastic.”

It’s not been the easiest season for the 27-year-old however, he showed just how vital he can be for Palace when at his best, nullifying most of the threat that the hosts put on the Eagles.

Joachim Andersen was deservedly the man of the match against Liverpool

To echo Given’s praise for the centre-back, Andersen’s numbers reinforced just how much of a force to be reckoned with he was at Anfield, as provided by Sofascore.

Joachim Andersen’s game in numbers v Liverpool:

  • 13 clearances
  • 1 interception
  • 1 block
  • 100% ground duels won
  • 9 long balls completed
  • 1 big chance created

After his inspired performance against the Reds, Palace fans will hope to see more of the same from the defender, who has shown just how capable he is of keeping a clean sheet against some of the world’s best attackers.
