Report: Nuno wants Nottingham Forest to sign 'outstanding' international goalkeeper

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is ready to give the green light for the Reds to sign an international goalkeeper this summer.

The Reds and goalkeepers have a love-hate relationship this season. Forest have used no fewer than three goalkeepers – all with varying degrees of success.

Matt Turner began the season as the number one and was seemingly set to be the number one when Espirito Santo first came to the club.

However, a string of high-profile errors saw the head coach make the change with Odysseas Vlachodimos doing little to impress too.

The Greek international signed from Benfica on transfer deadline day in the summer but was unable to star during a run of five Premier League games.

Now, Matz Sels is the number one after his £5 million transfer from Strasbourg in the summer. Sels earned rave reviews for Belgium last month and will remain the primary goalkeeper this season.

However, a familiar link to Forest has now been mentioned once again – and Espirito Santo is keen to get the player to the City Ground this summer.

Espirito Santo wants Forest to sign Liverpool stopper Caoimhin Kelleher

Well, according to the Daily Mail, Espirito Santo seemingly wants Forest to be back in the market for a goalkeeper – and he likes Kelleher.

The 25-year-old looks almost certain to leave Liverpool in the summer with the player very keen to start playing football on a regular basis.

Celtic have also been linked with a move for the Republic Of Ireland international and both clubs could probably offer regular action.

Kelleher has actually earned an extended run in the Liverpool team this season, with the player starring in the Carabao Cup final.

With Alisson out injured, he went on a run of eight consecutive Premier League starts but was back on the bench on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of Kelleher and called him ‘outstanding’ for his heroics earlier in the 2023/24 campaign.

Kelleher could be City Ground star for many years

This does feel like a similar situation to the one with Dean Henderson last summer – and Forest simply can’t afford to make the same mistakes.

Forest didn’t feel the money was worth it for Henderson and now whilst he stars at Crystal Palace, the Reds fight relegation again.

A younger, more trustworthy keeper is required going forward and in our view, Turner and Vlachodimos are surplus to requirements.

Kelleher is the sort of goalkeeper who at 25 could star for many years at Forest and his valuation could rise.

It’s unlikely that the player will cost a fortune in the grand scheme of things and hopefully, Forest can move quickly for Kelleher if Premier League football is secured.
