Last time Sheffield Wednesday beat Stoke at Hillsborough, Garry Monk hailed one 'fantastic' Owls star

Sheffield Wednesday welcome Stoke City to Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday return to Championship action with a visit from fellow relegation candidates Stoke City on Saturday.

It’s become a huge game near the foot of the table with both teams desperate for all three points.

Many predicted the Owls to struggle this season, and that they have, but Stoke have once again underperformed, finding themselves in 19th and just three points ahead of the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday go into this game rejuvenated by their 2-2 comeback draw vs Norwich City in midweek.

In their club history, Sheffield Wednesday have beaten Stoke City 39 times, losing 35, and drawing 24.

The last time the two teams met, earlier this season, Wednesday nicked a huge three points through a late Anthony Musaba strike.

That win was part of a memorable December turnaround under Danny Rohl.

Times have been tougher since then, however, with Wednesday having won just one of their last six, albeit losing just one of their last four now.

And the Owls haven’t beaten Stoke City at Hillsborough since 2019.

Last time Wednesday beat Stoke City at home, Garry Monk was the manager.

He’s now in charge of Cambridge United and he’s trying desperately to keep them in League One, but that 2019/20 season saw the Owls finish in 16th place of the Championship table.

Monk replaced Steve Bruce in the September, and in the October watched on as his side beat Stoke City at Hillsborough.

And the game was settled by a single Massimo Luongo goal.

The Australian, now pushing for promotion with Ipswich Town, neatly finished off a well-worked Sheffield Wednesday move, in what was his first season in S6.

What could’ve been for Massimo Luongo

Whilst Luongo is showing his class now, having featured 39 times in the Championship for Ipswich this season, his time at Sheffield Wednesday was blighted by injury.

He made 69 league appearances for the club in three seasons.

The retired Australian international, now 31, made no mistakes about his quality; Wednesday fans saw that whenever Luongo was on the pitch, but he just couldn’t stay fit.

Monk labelled Luongo ‘fantastic’ after that win vs Stoke City.

Monk also highlighted Luongo’s ball-carrying ability and that kind of midfielder is arguably something that Rohl doesn’t have right now.

He has players like Djeidi Gassama and Musaba who can do that role, though both players are still very raw.

Either way, Sheffield Wednesday vs Stoke City is one to watch out for in the Championship this weekend, with a win able to lift the Owls well out of the drop zone.
