Striker now struggling for goals after claims Tottenham in contact to sign him

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to consider signing another striker this summer as Ange Postecoglou shapes his squad in North London.

Tottenham saw Harry Kane leave the club last summer but his quest for trophies at Bayern Munich hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far.

Spurs didn’t bring in a direct replacement though, instead pouncing to land a versatile wide man in Brennan Johnson.

Timo Werner arrived in January but has mostly played down the left flank with Postecoglou seemingly not viewing him as a striker.

So where do Tottenham go next?

Richarlison hasn’t quite worked out as hoped and Tottenham may be tempted to splash the cash on another striker this summer.

Much will depend on whether the £15.5million purchase clause in Werner’s loan move is activated but Tottenham are looking elsewhere.

Tottenham want Santiago Gimenez

Postecoglou has previously shown a willingness to play with a classic number nine.

Giorgos Giakoumakis and Oh Hyeon-gyu fit that bill during Postecoglou’s Celtic days and Tottenham could go for a centre forward.

Reports in March suggested that Tottenham had made contract over a deal for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The Mexico international has shown himself as a well-rounded striker who can hold up play with his back to goal and also run in behind.

Gimenez turns 23 this week and he fits the bill in terms of Tottenham looking for players who have the potential to get even better under Postecoglou.

The problem is that Gimenez has seen his form fall off a cliff since the end of 2023 – and Tottenham must be concerned.

Gimenez form

Gimenez started the season on fire, smashing 20 goals in his first 21 games of the campaign, right up until the winter break in the Netherlands.

The expectation was that Gimenez would come back and continue his outstanding form, but that just hasn’t happened.

Gimenez has now scored just four times in 17 games since Feyenoord returned to action in January.

It’s now five games without a goal for Gimenez and there are concerns that he may not be cut out for a big move at this stage in his development.

Tottenham fans will have memories of Vincent Janssen, a player who scored in the Eredivisie but just wasn’t cut out for the Premier League.

Gimenez has impressed ever since joining Feyenoord but he must now get himself out of a mini-slump and prove that he is worth spending money on this summer.

If his struggles continue, don’t be surprised to see Tottenham look elsewhere this summer.
