'Immense': Robbie Savage seriously impressed by what £27m Arsenal player has managed this season

Arsenal have had a number of top performers this season and it’s safe to say a few of them could be in line for mentions when it comes to teams of the season.

The Gunners have been brilliant all season long from back to front.

David Raya has shone in goal since replacing Aaron Ramsdale and the back two of William Saliba and Gabriel have been as good as anything in the league.

In front of them, Declan Rice has been superb and the likes of Martin Odegaard, Jorginho and Kai Havertz have complimented Rice well.

Further forward, Bukayo Saka has once again shown his class, while Gabriel Martinelli has had a standout campaign.

However, going back to that defence, it is the performances of French defender William Saliba that have really caught the eye of many a fan and pundit.

And putting together an early team of the season for The Mirror, Robbie Savage has picked Saliba as his centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk, citing his performances against both Liverpool and Man City this season as being major factors.

“Sorely tempted to pick both of the Gunners’ centre-backs as a pair, but they missed Saliba when he was injured on the run-in last season and he has been immense in big games against City and Liverpool this year,” Savage said.

William Saliba is one of Arsenal’s greatest bargains at £27m

It might sound strange to suggest that £27m is a bargain fee. But in today’s game and given someone like Van Dijk cost more than £70m, you have to point it out.

Saliba has been nothing short of brilliant for Arsenal all season long and as Savage mentions here, his injury last season completely derailed them.

This year, he has stayed fit and has stood up to be counted.

Alongside Gabriel, Saliba has managed to develop one of the best partnerships not only in England but across the whole of Europe.

Arsenal’s defensive record in the league – just 24 goals conceded – speaks volumes about how good Saliba is and he’s rightfully included here by Savage.

If Arsenal do manage to win the league, then Saliba will have been as important as anyone.
