N.J. author struck by SUV on Easter Sunday dies of injuries

A 72-year-old author who was seriously injured after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle on Easter Sunday in Monmouth County died last week, authorities said.

Douglas Yorke was hit at 5:45 p.m. on March 31 on Samara Drive just south of Obre Place in Shrewsbury Borough, police said Tuesday.

Yorke was brought to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries on April 11. The driver stopped and spoke to police following the collision. No charges have been filed and no summonses have been issued, though the incident remains under investigation, Shrewsbury Police Lt. Adam Cerminaro said.

Yorke, of Red Bank, was an avid bike rider who pedaled “all over the East Coast and Texas,” according to an online obituary. He also wrote a book on road maps in 1996.

“After amassing one of the largest private collections of American road maps, he published a book on their artwork and the story they reveal about American history, ‘Hitting the Road,’ ” the obituary said.

Yorke also penned several op-eds for the New York Times, according to his obituary.

He is survived by three adult children, a grandchild and five siblings, as well as 13 nieces and nephews.
