‘Better option’: Pundit says £13m Arsenal player should’ve started over Kai Havertz on Sunday

Arsenal lost to Aston Villa on Sunday, and the inquest into why Arsenal lost this game.

There have been plenty of issues pointed out already, from the Gunners’ lack of attacking firepower to a lack of defensive concentration.

However, speaking on Premier League Productions, Don Hutchison has pointed out an issue in the midfield, claiming that Mikel Arteta got his selection wrong in that area of the pitch.

Arsenal’s midfield makeup was all wrong

Hutchison spoke about the decision to use Kai Havertz in the midfield, claiming that it would’ve been better if Jorginho had started the game.

“The analysis team have clearly seen some sort of weakness, but it’s always a risk when you put Havertz into midfield. It’s not his best position. He was just starting to score goals. Jorginho would’ve been the better option in my opinion, someone who can control the game, there are few teams who’ve done that to Arsenal in terms of holding the ball,” Hutchison said.

Jorginho should’ve started

We have to agree with Hutchison here.

When you’re playing against a team as intense as Aston Villa who love to press, you’re best off having an orchestrator in the midfield who can just slow things down and play all around the press.

Of course, doing that isn’t easy, but Jorginho is one of the best in the business when it comes to beating the press and exposing teams that try to do too much off the ball.

Unfortunately, Mikel Arteta didn’t see things that way, and it’s probably no coincidence that this coincided with Kai Havertz’s worst performance for Arsenal in recent weeks.

Jorginho would have been a very useful player to have on the pitch against Aston Villa, and perhaps if Mikel Arteta had the chance to replay this game he’d put the £13m man in his starting XI.
