Sheffield Wednesday already have ready-made Liam Palmer replacement in 'dangerous' 27-year-old - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday already have a ‘dangerous’ defender who can replace Liam Palmer next season.

Sheffield Wednesday are coming to the end of a turbulent season, but still haven’t discovered their fate.

Confirmation as to whether the Owls will stay up or get relegated will be likely followed by a mad rush to ensure key squad members are offered new deals, while others will bring their time at Hillsborough to an end.

It is still completely unclear who will be staying at the club, with both Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer potentially playing their last game in front of their home support after so many years next week.

The latter has spent a whopping 25 years with Wednesday, having made his senior debut in August 2010 – when Bailey Cadamarteri was only five years old.

Palmer has been vital to Danny Rohl’s transformation this term and his versatility has seen him come in handy all over the pitch.

However, his relationship with Rohl, the rest of the squad and the supporters doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t destined for his next chapter this summer.

While Palmer has slowed down and maybe doesn’t have the same quality as he used to have, he will still be a big loss for the club.

Pol Valentin can nail down that right-back spot now

While the Owls are likely to lose a lot of players at the end of the season, they can be content with that right-back position as the void left by Palmer could be kept in good hands.

However, the Spaniard has really turned things around in the second half of the campaign, becoming a ‘fan favourite‘ and really making a positive impact on their attempts to avoid relegation.

What does the Spaniard need to work on?

Valentin definitely needs to work on his defensive side, but going forward he has been brilliant and he could prove to be a vital player next season if he can continue to develop and adapt to English football.

Rohl has already had the ‘dangerous’ 27-year-old playing in different positions this term too, making one appearance from central midfield in the win over Preston back in December.

It will take a lot for Valentin to become the reliable, versatile player that Palmer has been, but his growth this season certainly leaves the 32-year-old’s exit less of a concern.

They will definitely need to keep hold of Rohl if we are to see the best of Valentin though, as he seems to be the perfect coach to bring out his potential.
