93 touches, 6 key passes: Sheffield Wednesday ace reminded Rohl just how important he is v Stoke - opinion

One Sheffield Wednesday ace really showed just how important he is with a ‘fantastic’ performance yesterday.

Sheffield Wednesday were left kicking themselves as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Stoke City.

The Owls took the lead just after the hour mark through Liam Palmer, but their celebrations were short lived before Luke Cundle equalised.

Danny Rohl‘s side are now unbeaten in four of their last five games, but have managed to win only one of them, leaving them one point from safety in the Championship table.

That wasn’t to say it wasn’t a fairly dominant performance from Wednesday, who managed 15 shots and 55% possession at Hillsborough.

But they were unable to take their chances and were forced to settle for a draw against their relegation rivals.

Will Vaulks did one thing so much more than any other player

There was some impressive performances from the Owls though, with Will Vaulks one player in particular who certainly proved his worth.

The midfielder was hailed as ‘fantastic’ against the Potters, in his first start since the defeat to Middlesbrough.

Vaulks was sofascore‘s man of the match with an 8.1 – making 30 touches more than any other player on the pitch (93), completing 45 passes, picking up an impressive six key passes, completing four crosses, winning seven headers, making three clearances and also winning three free-kicks.

The 30-year-old was brought back into the fold yesterday and had 90 minutes to really prove himself, and he certainly did that.

Vaulks was exceptional in the middle of the park and really made a difference, creating a number of chances that his teammates just couldn’t finish off.

After his ‘brilliant’ second half performance against Norwich that saw him bag two assists, there is no way that he should be benched for the final three matches of the campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday would be stupid to let Vaulks leave

If Sheffield Wednesday are going to stay up then Vaulks will play a key role in it, so Rohl would be making a massive mistake if he isn’t one of the first names on the team-sheet over the next few weeks.

The midfielder is also playing for his future at the club, assuming he wishes to remain at Hillsborough beyond the summer.

He is one of many players who are out of contract at the end of the season, and Vaulks is really proving that he should be one of those who are offered fresh terms.

At times it has seemed like he is under-appreciated at the Yorkshire outfit, but he would certainly be missed if he was to leave in the transfer window.
