Report: Tottenham eye shock move for £36m Manchester United player who Jamie O'Hara called 'shocking'

A bizarre transfer rumour has emerged claiming Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing a Manchester United player this summer.

It’s that time of the year again when the rumour mill starts throwing out speculations every other minute.

Most transfer rumours end up not materialising, and as fans, we can tell right from the beginning that there’s almost zero chance of some of them happening.

We have one such rumour coming out of Italy this week concerning Tottenham and Manchester United.

Shock rumour regarding Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and Tottenham emerges

Tottenham and Manchester United are both expected to be active in this summer’s transfer window.

Spurs look transformed under Ange Postecoglou this season. They are fighting to finish fourth in the Premier League table and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham will need reinforcements if they get there.

Manchester United, like Spurs, will try to make a few new signings this summer, but before they do that, they will have to let some of their current players leave.

There’s a long list of players linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, and one man who is almost certain to depart is Anthony Martial.

The Frenchman joined Manchester United for £36 million (BBC) in 2015 and came in with a lot of hype. Some people even expected him to become the next Thierry Henry.

Martial, for one reason or another, has failed to live up to all the expectations, and he is set to leave Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer.

TuttoSport (print edition, page 3, 16th April 2024) has revealed that Juventus are interested in signing Martial, but in what is a shocking claim, the report says Tottenham want him too.

Spurs have previously been interested in Martial. Mauricio Pochettino wanted him at Tottenham many years ago, but it’s hard to believe that the North Londoners are still interested in him.

The report claims that Martial, who will be available on a free transfer, wants wages in the region of £5.12 million a year (€6m).

Jamie O’Hara’s past comments about Martial explain why this move will never happen

Football is a funny game and anything can happen, but Tottenham signing Anthony Martial this summer, in our opinion, is as close to impossible as anything can be.

Spurs have a number of quality options in attack at the moment, and they are expected to add to that this summer. Ange Postecoglou will want someone who not only fits his system but also has the right attitude.

Martial is just not that player. The Frenchman has played less than 450 minutes of football in the Premier League this season. He hasn’t been a good player at all for Manchester United over the years, and his attitude has been questioned plenty of times.

Tottenham fan and pundit Jamie O’Hara wanted Martial at Tottenham back in the day, but after watching him closely in 2021, he changed his mind.

The former Spurs midfielder’s comments hold weight to this day, and we think they perfectly explain why Postecoglou will not even consider a move to sign Martial.

“Martial was shocking, really bad performance from him,” O’Hara said after Manchester United drew 1-1 against Southampton.

“He just plays like he’s not bothered if he plays well or not – it’s a weird attitude. He plays like he doesn’t care if he’s good or not. He’s got so much talent, but not good enough – miles off it. Him and Lukaku are worlds apart.”
