What Gary Neville said about Cole Palmer earlier this season that now looks really foolish

For anyone who has watched any of Chelsea this season, it is not difficult to see who their best player has been this season.

Cole Palmer moved himself to the top of the goalscoring charts in the Premier League on Monday night with his sensational four goals against Everton.

His first half perfect hat-trick was the fastest in Chelsea history in the Premier League, and teammates and rival players were quick to praise him.

Wesley Fofana and Declan Rice both took to social media after the game to send credit his way, and confidence for the 21-year-old is no doubt at its highest.

He was the latest permanent addition to the side, coming in on deadline day in the summer transfer window.

It seems not everyone was convinced that he was going to be as promising a signing as he has been. Gary Neville was particularly critical of Palmer early into his tenure in West London.

He said: “It’s just a little bit mad, isn’t it? It’s chaotic. We’ve said it for 15 months with the amount of players they have signed. I saw Palmer come on today who they bought for £40million from City and you think, ‘there’s another one’.

“There’s no doubt that with [Roman] Abramovich leaving, and this new Boehly project coming in, there’s no danger in their attack, it’s been everything but stability. In fact, it’s been absolute madness in terms of every department in the club changing!

“They need to stop, just stop. Let things slow down, because when you have that type of project and it all gets disorganised and you don’t know who is going to play week-in, week-out, it seems like something I’m not sure about.”

While there certainly is an argument to suggest the Blues have spent in areas that they do not need to, and could have prioritised other areas, that certainly can not be said about Palmer.

In just his first season at the club, many believe Chelsea should build their project around the 21-year-old, and his brilliance this season has shown that he is easily one of the signings of the season in world football, let alone for Todd Boehly’s Chelsea.
