David Hennessey announces he will step down as Long Melford boss at end of Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division season

David Hennessey has announced he will step down as Long Melford first-team manager at the end of the season.

Hennessey was promoted to the position of manager in May 2022, following the departure of long-serving boss Jamie Bradbury, after two seasons in charge of the club’s reserve side.

Long Melford, who currently sit 16th in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division table after a 0-0 draw at home to Brantham Athletic last night, achieved an 11th-placed finish under Hennessey in his first season in charge last campaign.

He will take charge of his final home match as Melford boss on Saturday, against Downham Town (3pm), before his final game at Hadleigh United on Wednesday (7.45pm).

In a statement on X, Hennessey wrote: “After four amazing years with the club, I can confirm I am stepping down as Long Melford first-team manager at the end of the season.

“We’ve had a great ride and I’ll forever be grateful for the people I got to work alongside on this journey.

“From day one, I was made to feel part of a something more than just a football club. Thank you to every player who ever pulled on that Melford shirt for me.

“I’d like to thank Richard Kemp for his unwavering support and commitment to this club. Thank you to the committee for trusting me with the team.”

He added: “Special thanks to Jamie Bradbury for bringing me into the club and showing me how this ‘little village side in Suffolk’ can really get under your skin and take over your life if you let it.

“Thank you to all of our volunteers and helpers, without you, there would be no club. Thank you to our fans, you may be small in number but you are mighty in your love for this club.

“Lastly, thank you to my family. For your patience, understanding, support and encouragement. I know I’m not always there because of football, but I wouldn’t be here without you.

“To all at Long Melford, I say thank you. I wish you nothing but success and goodbye.”

Hennessey admitted he does not know what the future holds for him in football but told people to ‘stay tuned for the next chapter’.
