Khun Top told what needs to change at Leicester City by ex-head of recruitment Lee Congerton

A former Leicester City head of recruitment has told Khun Top what needs to change.

Leicester in recent years have had great success in identifying lesser-known talents before developing them into top-end Premier League players sought after by some of the biggest clubs in the country.

That was certainly the case for Wesley Fofana, who joined The Foxes as a teenager from Saint-Etienne prior to his £70m switch to Chelsea.

It seems Mads Hermansen may become the latest example of that, as he continues to excel between the sticks for Enzo Maresca‘s side, having joined as a relative unknown from Danish outfit Brondby IF last summer.

Responsible for developing that transfer strategy was ex-Leicester chief Lee Congerton, who has recently revealed what the club needs to change moving forward.

Leicester supporters will be familiar with Congerton, as he was accountable for 15 signings during his near three-year tenure at the club before leaving for Serie A outfit Atalanta in 2022.

Below are all of the additions he made, descending from most to least expensive, as per Transfermarkt.

A couple of years on from his hit-and-miss spell in the East Midlands, Congerton has now hailed the City owner and offered him some words of advice, speaking to The Telegraph.

“At Leicester, what an owner (Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha). What a guy. He deserves all the praise and credit,” the 50-year-old said.

“I know they’ve had a bit of a difficult time. Wesley left, (Timothy) Castagne, Harvey (Barnes), (James) Maddison, Youri (Tielemans), you are talking top players. Players need to be hungry. If it becomes the norm and you’re not striving and there is no hunger there.

“You always need to refresh, sign at that level.”

He appeared to hint that the club have stood still and noted that players may have lost hunger due to the lack of signings in recent windows.

Leicester City’s failed summer rebuild that cost them their Premier League status

Whether Congerton intended to directly refer to the summer of 2022, only he knows, but it certainly sounded like it.

He used the word ‘refresh’, which is a word supporters heard Brendan Rodgers use leading up to that transfer window.

It was almost assured that there would be a major shake-up of the squad, with plenty of quality additions.

But those hopes never materialised, as City in fact moved backwards, selling Fofana and allowing Kasper Schmeichel to depart without adequate replacements.

Ultimately, the sub-par window cost them their Premier League status, and as Congerton alluded to, players seemed to lose that hunger.

Leicester can’t afford to make that same mistake again.
