Former Leicester City assistant has revealed what Enzo Maresca must do in the run-in

A former Leicester City assistant has revealed what Enzo Maresca must do in the automatic promotion race.

Maresca‘s side have been on a dismal run of late and they must get back on track quickly, or else their hopes of going up automatically will be in real danger.

Having suffered a 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle on Friday evening, Leicester will be desperate to bounce back against West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

A win could move them back to the summit of the Championship table, with league leaders Ipswich Town in a tough game away at Hull City.

Michael Appleton, who worked at Leicester as an assistant manager during the reigns of Craig Shakespeare and Claude Puel, has told Maresca what he needs to do in the run-in.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s EFL All Access podcast, Appleton gave Maresca advice ahead in the automatic promotion race.

“I think you’ve got to strip it back now,” the 48-year-old said.

“It’s literally down to three games and you can see the end line whereas at the start of the season to sit down in front of a group of players and say ‘look lads we are going to get promoted this year, this is what it looks like’.

“It’s like 46 games away, eight or nine months away. Sometimes it can very very difficult.”

Appleton continued: “But when you can break it down into small sort of groups of games throughout the season, it’s a lot easier to manage and control the emotions and whether you do well or you don’t do well during that period of games.

“So I think he’ll try and sort of strip it back and probably get two or through or the senior players on board a little bit and use their experience to tap into some of the talented players in the group and just try and get them to not overcomplicate things.”

The former Charlton Athletic boss also noted that the fans have an important role to play in the remaining three home games at King Power Stadium.

“And I think obviously in the home games, clearly the fans will play their part in trying to get them over the line.”

The mission is clear for Leicester City

It’s pretty simple what Leicester must do to gain promotion back to the Premier League. Three wins from four will be enough to mathematically secure a top-two finish.

If City don’t want a nervy final day game against Blackburn Rovers, they must focus on putting together a three-game winning run, starting against West Brom.

Their destiny remains totally in their own hands despite a poor run of form, so they must remain positive heading into what will be a crucial few weeks for the football club.
