'We all said it': Vaulks explains half-time message during Sheffield Wednesday's win over Blackburn Rovers

Will Vaulks has explained what was said in the dressing room at half-time during Sheffield Wednesday’s win over Blackburn Rovers.

Sheffield Wednesday picked up a vital win over Blackburn yesterday, finally lifting them out of the relegation zone.

Josh Windass’ superb opener sent the away fans into hysterics, but it was only minutes later that Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics equalised.

The Owls have been unable to hold onto leads on many occasions this term, and it looked like their trip to Ewood Park would be no different.

The two teams headed into half-time all level, but the three points for Danny Rohl‘s side was absolutely vital.

Sheffield Wednesday needed to stay ‘calm’

With Wednesday finding themselves 3-1 up inside 20 minutes of the second half, Will Vaulks has now explained exactly what was discussed at half-time.

Speaking to Sky Sports at full-time, the midfielder said: “We knew first half it was a little bit nervy, both teams knew how important the three points were today, especially watching the results come in yesterday. So it was a little bit nervy, so the thing was let’s just calm down a bit, we’re playing ok, we’re doing alright in the game.

“Let’s try and listen to them [the fans], they suck us in, we all said it, and just build momentum. Take no risks – and I thought we were really good at that today. When the chances came, we took them.”

It’s all in the Owls’ hands

Sheffield Wednesday have been unable to bounce back from equalisers plenty of times, failing to pick up an important win against Stoke City due to Luke Cundle’s leveller last time out too.

However, the early goals gave the Owls plenty of time to reflect and fight back, while their cool, calm and collected attitude really paid off.

There is huge pressure on this squad in the final weeks of the season but they seem unnerved – just confident that they will get the job done.

It previously looked extremely unlikely that the Yorkshire outfit would stay up, but that second half at Ewood Park has given them so much hope and now it is entirely in their hands.

If they can replicate that performance in their final two games then they may be safe, though the penultimate match against West Brom could be really tricky, with the Baggies also looking to secure a place in the play-offs.

The Owls haven’t beaten West Brom since 2007 either, so it certainly won’t be an easy afternoon’s work at Hillsborough.
