'Maybe...': Barry Bannan drops hint on his Sheffield Wednesday future with message to Liam Palmer

Barry Bannan has just dropped a huge hint on his Sheffield Wednesday future, following the win at Blackburn Rovers.

Sheffield Wednesday, for a second time this season, beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 on Saturday.

Danny Rohl and his players won the reverse fixture at Hillsborough in December and got a huge win in front of more than 7,000 Owls fans at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Josh Windass opened the scoring with a well-taken goal from range, with Marvin Johnson then adding the second, and an owl goal sealing the win for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls now sit in 21st place of the Championship table with two games left to play; one point above Birmingham City in 22nd.

Bannan is one of the many out of contract in the summer.

Almost 20 players could be set to leave the club in the summer, either as a free agent or by seeing their loan deals expire.

Bannan made his 400th Sheffield Wednesday appearance on Saturday, having been with the Owls for nine years now.

But he’s so far been quite tight-lipped on his future in S6.

Speaking previously, Bannan gave this response to whether he’ll be here next year:

“I’ve not heard anything. I think it’s just a case of knuckling down for these last six games and what will be, will be.”

Bannan though has just given his biggest hint on his Sheffield Wednesday future so far.

Teammate and fellow Wednesday stalwart Liam Palmer took to Instagram after the win at Blackburn, congratulating Bannan on making his 400th appearance for the club.

Bannan replied, commenting: ‘Cheers brother pleasure too mate 9 years and maybe more’.

Will Barry Bannan stay at Sheffield Wednesday

That comment from Bannan speaks volumes.

After that win, he seems confident that the Owls stay in the league, although nothing is guaranteed yet, and with that it seems like the Scot is willing to stay on.

There’s a sense that relegation would see Rohl, the coaching staff, and half the players leave, likely Bannan as well.

But staying up would keep it all in tact and would keep the feel good mood under Rohl running into next season too, so that might explain the timing of Bannan’s comment.

He put in another memorable performance on Saturday and has been a standout performer for the Owls this season, despite a lack of goals and assists (one of each).

Rohl though is already keen on keeping Bannan at the club, and if Bannan is now keen as well, it should be just a formality once the season is finished and the club’s Championship status is hopefully extended for another season.
