Leicester boss Enzo Maresca explains why 5-0 win vs Southampton wasn't the best performance of the season

Leicester City were rampant against Southampton on Tuesday evening.

Enzo Maresca‘s side dominated the affair and didn’t concede a single shot on target, which evinces just how convincing the performance was.

Three points for the hosts moved them four points clear at the top of the Championship table and now within touching distance of booking an instant return to the Premier League.

Abdul Fatawu has received much of the plaudits after his stunning hat-trick, as has Jamie Vardy, who scored and assisted in the 5-0 thrashing.

Though, despite the resounding scoreline, Maresca didn’t feel it was the best performance of the season.

Since joining The Foxes last summer, Maresca has been very clear and absolute in his philosophy, which is all about control.

The former Manchester City assistant wants his side to dominate the ball, though, last night, it was the visitors who had the lion’s share of possession.

“I just said, most of the time people judge results,” Maresca told BBC Radio Leicester.

“I thought the performance was good, I don’t think it was our best of the season.”

Maresca expanded: “I think there were spaces to play more, so for me, we could play more.

“We could keep the ball more times.”

Whilst he was clearly delighted with aspects of the display, it’s pretty evident that he wasn’t over-pleased with the stray passes that led to less possession of the ball.

Leicester City have a different way of playing

A criticism of Maresca’s this season has been his lack of a plan b, with many suggesting the football can be too predictable at times.

Last night, his side showed a completely different side to their game, as they defended resolutely before hitting Saints on the counterattack. The fifth and final goal was the perfect example of their game plan.

Indeed, City will likely look to dominate proceedings against Preston North End on Monday evening but notwithstanding that, they’ve shown a willingness to play counter-attacking football which could be a more prominent tactic in the Premier League, if they are to gain promotion.

The pace of Fatawu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Vardy and co, means they can be deadly in transition as Saints found out.

It’s certainly a relatable plan b to call upon when needed.
