Fete in Long Melford, near Sudbury, cancelled for 2024 days after Big Night Out announcement

A village fete scheduled for the summer has been cancelled due to a flooded field.

Organisers of the event, in Long Melford, said since October ‘there has been a considerable amount of rainfall’ across the village, near Sudbury.

In a Facebook post, Amy Hyde Parker, who runs Melford Hall estate, said: “It is with great regret that unfortunately the 2024 village fete, due to be held on July 13, has to be cancelled.

“All necessary parties have come together to try and ease the water that is currently sitting in this field and there is just not enough time to achieve this before the fete.

“This is no one’s fault, unfortunately the weather gods have just not been on our side this year.

“Our hope is that over the summer all the necessary people can work together to reduce the water retention in this area and the fete will return in 2025 on July 12.

“We appreciate that this is a huge disappointment to the charities in the village, as we know this is one of the major fund-raising events.

“We are looking at other opportunities that we can give you to ensure that you can achieve your targets.

“Other sites have been considered but have not been deemed suitable for various reasons.”

The location of the fete was set to be opposite Melford Hall, with parking available on nearby village greens.

Earlier this week it was announced that the Big Night Out firework display, also in Long Melford, will not go ahead this year, unless fresh funding support can be found.

In a statement, organisers said: “It is with regret that Project Seven must announce that there will not be a Big Night Out in 2024, due to financial pressures and other demands put on to us.

“The only way we can continue is by obtaining sponsorship.

”We will continue supporting local events with our food unit and are also actively looking for other events to expand this side of our fund-raising.

“Thank you everyone for your support to the Big Night Out over the years.”

Amy Hyde Parker was approached for comment.
