Sheffield Wednesday forgotten man features for U21s during defeat vs Swansea City on Monday

A rarely-seen Sheffield Wednesday player has stepped up his return to action with some minutes for the U21s.

Sheffield Wednesday have been fairly fortunate on the injury front this season.

Up until injuries to the likes of Ian Poveda and Di’Shon Bernard, the latter making an impressive return to action over the weekend, the club haven’t had to contend with too many sidelined players.

It’s a testament to the size of the Sheffield Wednesday first-team squad, even if it is once again a focus on quantity rather than quality.

Sheffield Wednesday head to Wearside to face Sunderland this weekend.

It’s the Owls’ final game of the 2023/24 season and they sit in 20th place of the Championship table for it, following an impressive 3-0 win over West Brom last time out.

Owls fans sold out Hillsborough and helped get their team across the line following what’s been a turbulent and testing season on the whole.

But with one game left, Danny Rohl‘s side have a three-point gap to Birmingham City in 22nd, who play Norwich City on the final day, whilst Plymouth Argyle in 21st and on 48 points play Hull City.

And for Wednesday’s penultimate game against Sunderland, Poveda seems to be the only absentee, though there’s a slim chance he features with the Colombian having been somewhat 50/50 for the past couple of games.

Juan Delgado also remains sidelined.

Chilean international Delgado hasn’t played for Sheffield Wednesday since October, and he hasn’t played for the Owls under Rohl yet.

A hip injury has kept him sidelined for the bulk of the season but he’s recently returned to first-team training.

And the 31-year-old has now stepped up his return to action ahead of next season with some minutes for the U21s in their 1-0 defeat vs Swansea City on Monday.

Juan Delgado could replace one man next season

Delgado is very versatile, being able to play as a right wing-back or a right winger.

Pol Valentin has the right wing-back spot locked down right now and seemingly for next season too, so Delgado may be utilised more as a winger next time round.

And he could well be a useful replacement for Poveda who is currently set to leave S6 in the summer.

His loan deal from Leeds United expires and so too does his contract there, with Sheffield Wednesday reportedly keen on a permanent move.

Though if that doesn’t work out, Delgado like many others could flourish under Rohl and become a key player for the Owls.

His return to fitness comes at the perfect time; just ahead of the summer and the pre-season, so Delgado will hopefully be fit and firing for when Rohl is making decisions going into the new season.
