Darren Ambrose reacts on 14th anniversary of Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 Crystal Palace

Darren Ambrose has now sent a message to Crystal Palace fans on the 14th anniversary of Survival Sunday – a result which arguably kept the Eagles alive.

Crystal Palace needed a point against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on the final day of the 2009/10 campaign to remain a Championship outfit – while the Owls needed a win to survive.

It was a rollercoaster of a season, as we looked set to make the Championship play-offs before administration led to a 10-point deduction and flipped the 2009/10 campaign on its head.

Had Paul Hart oversaw a defeat at Hillsborough, Crystal Palace may have struggled to find a buyer, and could well have been forced into liquidation.

Fortunately, Darren Ambrose was on hand to score the vital goal – and the Crystal Palace legend has now reacted on the 14th anniversary of Survival Sunday…

Darren Ambrose sends message to Crystal Palace fans

Well, the 40-year-old delivered an outstanding season in that 2009/10 campaign.

Ambrose scored 20 goals and provided 13 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions, but no strike was more significant than his effort against Sheffield Wednesday.

On the 14th anniversary of Survival Sunday, the man from Harlow wrote “14 years ❤️💙🦅” while also posting footage of his hugely important goal.

It ensured Crystal Palace remained in a position to be purchased by the CPFC2010 consortium – led by Steve Parish – and these 12 consecutive seasons in the Premier League would not be possible without the efforts of leaders like Ambrose, Shaun Derry, Paddy McCarthy, Clint Hill and Julian Speroni.

What a journey

It is almost hard to believe that we were 90 minutes away from potentially disappearing as a football club, but have now regularly dined at the top table among England’s elite clubs for 12 years in a row.

It just goes to show that football is a game of fine margins, and as we embark on what looks set to be an exciting period under Oliver Glasner, fans should remember the group who made it all possible – while not even being paid their wages on time on several occasions that year.
