£4 million transfer has ended Moyes as West Ham spell fizzles out into a damp squib - view

David Moyes has had plenty of ups and downs in charge of West Ham United over the past four-and-a-half years.

West Ham manager David Moyes is seemingly finished at the London Stadium, with the club thought to be actively eyeing up replacements for him.

It has been quite the journey for the Scot since December 2019. When he returned to take over the Hammers for the second time, there weren’t too many fans who wanted him back.

However, Moyes quickly changed the opinions of the majority of West Ham fans who were against his appointmnet.

The 61-year-old kept us in the Premier League and then guided us to sixth and seventh places finishes in the Premier League over the next two years, as well as a Europa League semi-final.

However, the best was yet to come…

Moyes guided the Hammers to our first major honour since 1980 last season, when we lifted the Europa Conference League trophy out in Prague.

After that magical night, the West Ham manager was in a great position to really take us forward, but we have regressed badly over the past nine months or so.

Moyes’s overly negative approach to matches and his dour pre-game rhetoric have ultimately cost him his job it seems.

Bizarrely though, the gaffer told reporters back in February that he had a contract sitting there waiting to sign in spite of our woeful run of form at the time, as quoted by BBC Sport:

“I’ve had really good conversations with the owners, with David Sullivan and Karren Brady. There’s a contract there for me and I’m the one deciding I want to wait until the end of the season.”

The sheer arrogance oozing from those comments was clear for everyone to see. To label him as an egomaniac might be harsh, but also fairly close to the truth.

In my opinion, there was one particular decision Moyes made that has turned out to be the straw that broke the camel’s back…

£4 million transfer has ended David Moyes at West Ham

Moyes has got some transfers absolutely spot on during his time at the London Stadium, including the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Emerson Palmieri.

However, the players brought into the club by the Scot haven’t all been hits.

For every Bowen there has been a Nikola Vlasic and for every Paqueta an Alex Kral.

Out of all the signings Moyes has made though, one in particular stands out alone as his worse of all-time…

Moyes brought Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium from Manchester City on loan back in the January transfer window.

The deal cost the club around £4 million in total, according to inside Sean Whetstone.

The 28-year-old has endured a woeful spell with West Ham though. Moyes really should have signed a left winger or a striker rather than Phillips in January.

And had he done just that, I’m sure we’d be in the race for the top six.

Phillips has proven to be disinterested in us and has no passion for the football club or commitment to the badge.

The 28-year-old has already had a set-to with one Hammers fan, and he won’t be signed permanently in the summer.

The signing of Kalvin Phillips will end up being David Moyes’s death warrant at West Ham. The fact that he pushed so hard to sign him over an attacking player is enough in itself to get him the sack really isn’t it!
