Tottenham could try to sign ‘outstanding’ Aston Villa player this summer – journalist

Tottenham need to add to their midfield this summer.

In recent weeks, Spurs’ midfield has been almost invisible as opposition teams have played through Ange Postecoglou’s side with so much ease.

Tottenham need some new signings in this position heading into the summer, while they also need to sign a few homegrown players to comply with ongoing UEFA and Premier League registration rules.

Speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing what Tottenham could do this summer, and he’s named Jacob Ramsey and Conor Gallagher as two potential targets.

Jacob Ramsey is a potential Tottenham target

Jones spoke about the ‘outstanding’ Aston Villa midfielder, claiming that Spurs are likely to look at him.

“Tottenham will try to sign a midfielder. They want homegrown players, they need to focus on players who are homegrown, that was said to me recently. So there’s a certain profile of player, so you’re see the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Conor Gallagher, these type of players linked with Tottenham,” Jones said.

Jacob Ramsey isn’t what Tottenham need

Jacob Ramsey is a fantastic footballer.

He’s smart, he’s silky and he’s brilliant going forwards.

However, Spurs don’t necessarily need that type of midfielder, at least not as a priority.

Interestingly, Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Ramsey in recent months.

Tottenham’s big problem is defensively, they need that holding midfield screen just in front of the back four to break up opposition attacks, and Ramsey isn’t that player.

If Tottenham manage to sign that sort of holding midfield player, then Ramsey would be a great signing to complement that arrival, but Spurs can’t fall into the trap of thinking that a creative player like Ramsey will fix their midfield issues.

Tottenham need some steel in the middle of the park, and, unfortunately, Ramsey isn’t the player who is going to bring that to Spurs this summer.

Ramsey is a great player, but he’s not necessarily what Spurs need right now.
