Thomas Tuchel reveals the real reason he withdrew Harry Kane in Bayern Munich’s defeat to Real Madrid

Harry Kane’s first season away from Tottenham Hotspur is going to provide a shock trophyless return for Bayern Munich.

The England captain has now almost completed his first full season away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the German outfit.

And it has been a sensational individual campaign for Harry Kane who has been able to find the back of the net 44 times across all competitions.

But for Thomas Tuchel’s side, it has been nothing short of a disastrous season having failed to pick up any silverware.

Bayern’s 11 year run of being the German champions has finally come to an end and they now find themselves dumped out of the Champions League.

Wednesday night’s defeat to Real Madrid caused a major stir with Kane removed for the final four minutes of the game with Bayern winning 1-0.

As Real Madrid completed a stunning late comeback, Tuchel has now had to reveal the reason why he brought off Kane in the dying minutes of the game.

What Thomas Tuchel said about withdrawing Harry Kane vs Real Madrid

A stunning second-half strike from Alphonso Davies put Bayern ahead on the night and in the tie with a final against Borussia Dortmund the prize.

However, the England captain was taken off with just minutes remaining in a game which could have ended up going to penalties.

And it certainly looked as if it could go that way just minutes after he was withdrawn as the former Stoke City striker Joselu clawed a goal back.

And shortly after, the striker managed to find the back of the net again to seal Madrid’s place at Wembley with Kane only able to watch on from the stands.

With Bayern denied a chance at lifting the trophy is staggering fashion, Tuchel was forced to address his decision to substitute Kane with minutes to go.

The reliable journalist Raphael Honigstein relayed the German coach’s comments in the wake of the dismal defeat at the Bernabeu.

It is a reason which makes a lot more sense than the thought of Kane’s removal being a tactical one, but the England captain was seen up on his feet furiously protesting a late offside call to the officials.

Disappointing night shown through Harry Kane’s stats

It has been a sensational campaign for Kane on a personal front with the striker doing exactly what Bayern signed him to do.

However, Wednesday night’s game against Real Madrid did not quite see the striker prove the same threat as he has shown throughout the campaign.

  • 85 minutes played
  • 1 assist
  • 3 shots
  • 25 touches
  • 44% pass accuracy
  • 11X possession lost
  • 1 foul

Kane has scored in both the quarter and semi finals of the Champions League this season – both coming from the penalty spot.

So there will still be questions remaining over the former Tottenham man’s ability to provide a real influence on these game at the highest level.
