Report: Man United plotting swoop for 30-cap 'gladiator' also wanted by Juventus, could cost less than £10m

Manchester United are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window in wake of another difficult season for the Red Devils.

There’s a good chance the Manchester United hierarchy and manager – whoever he may be – will work to bolster their defence in the coming months.

At centre-back Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans will be out of contract soon, while Victor Lindelof’s future at Old Trafford is also uncertain.

Manchester United could also do with a new left-back, with Tyrell Malacia out for most of the season and Luke Shaw being restricted to just 15 outings.

With that in mind, The Sun has now reported that the Red Devils are looking at a “true gladiator” who could be available for less than £10million.

The player in question is Atletico Madrid and Mozambique left-back Reinildo Mandava, a player also on the radar of Aston Villa and Juventus.

The report claims the 30-year-old could be available for just £8million, as his contract expires in 2025.

As well as Manchester United, the likes of Aston Villa and Juve are apparently keeping tabs on Reinildo.

Who is Manchester United target Reinildo Mandava?

Reinildo began his football journey in his native Mozambique before moving to Benfica’s academy in 2016.

He remained on their books until 2019, when he joined Lille for around £2million, making 87 outings, and three years later he moved to Atletico for a similar fee.

Reinildo has made 69 appearances for Los Colchoneros, though his time at the club has been hampered by a crucial ligament tear which kept him out between February and November 2023.

The 30-year-old has also won 35 caps for Mozambique and played at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout hailed Reinildo as a “true gladiator” in October 2022 for his actions in the 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao.

He blocked two powerful shots, first with his groin and then with his face, before arguing with the referee ‘all in the space of 4-5 seconds’.

This is the sort of tenacity that Manchester United could certainly do with at present.
