'He's been massive': James Garner hails 'class' Everton player who has made a really big difference recently

James Garner has hailed a “class” Everton player who has made a “massive” difference to Sean Dyche’s side of late.

Everton signed off their Premier League home campaign with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Goodison Park. The result means the Blues have hit the 40-point mark for the first time in three seasons.

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s first-half strike was the difference after a clever piece of play from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, which was praised by Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith on Soccer Saturday.

It’s been an excellent couple of weeks for the Everton striker, who has even talked up his chances of a return to the England set up for this summer’s European Championships in Germany.

Goals against Burnley, Liverpool and Luton Town have fired the 27-year-old back into form, and Calvert-Lewin’s teammate, Garner, has stated the importance of his presence at the top end of the pitch

He told Sky Sports: “He’s been massive, yeah. You can see the class that he’s got, especially in the derby.

“When he’s playing up top for us and full of confidence, you know he’s going to lead the line, and when he does get a chance, he’s going to put it in the back of the net like he’s shown in the last three, four, five games. It’s massive that he’s fit, and he plays.”

Can Dominic Calvert-Lewin really push for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad?

Next week’s final-day clash against Arsenal feels important for Calvert-Lewin. If he can produce another fine centre-forward performance and significantly dent the Gunners’ Premier League title hopes, Gareth Southgate will be forced to take note.

Right now, the decision appears to centre around whether Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney will be selected as Harry Kane’s understudy in Germany.

Watkins has typically been touted as a player who can run in behind and stretch defences. Toney is the man who holds the ball up.

Calvert-Lewin is a mixture of the two.

When at his best, there are very few Premier League strikers who are as well-rounded. If the England boss isn’t, at the very least, considering the Everton striker, he’s already made a blunder.
