‘Huge’: Pundit says one Man City player has been just like Yaya Toure this season

Nedum Onuoha has claimed that one Manchester City player has been just like Yaya Toure this season.

During his eight-year spell at the Manchester club, Toure scored 80 goals and delivered 47 assists in 316 games.

The Ivorian had his best Premier League campaign in the 2013/14 season where he found the back of the net 20 times and supplied nine assists in 35 matches.

10 years on from Toure’s impressive league campaign, a current City star has been likened to the 41-year-old and what he accomplished during that one particular season which saw the Blues win the Premier League title.

Speaking in a recent livestream on the club’s YouTube channel ahead of their recent 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, Onuoha had this to say about Phil Foden and the form he’s been in this season.

He said: “This [form] right now has extended for far longer than a lot of people anticipated but I think this is what happens for a guy that makes himself available, wants to be a big part of everything that City are doing in attack [and] defensively I think he’s been good as well.

“That feeling where he’s just been scoring goals week in, week out, this season reminds me in some ways of the Yaya Toure one where he hit like 20 [goals] from midfield.

“Obviously, two very different styles of player, but for impact, those big moments, those big goals, Phil is doing it.

“I think a lot of people always assume that everything’s always been fine rosy for him.

“You go back a year and he wasn’t starting for City at this point in the season. It was [Ilkay] Gundogan, it was [Kevin] De Bruyne, it was Bernardo Silva, it was Jack Grealish, but at the end of the season, his drive was to make sure that he was a big part of this season.

“If they finish with two trophies, he knows he was a huge part of that.”

Foden has been prolific this season

This season has seen Foden score 17 goals and deliver eight assists in 34 games, which isn’t too far away from Toure’s record from the 2013/14 campaign.

His overall appearances have earned the Englishman a solid season rating of 7.5/10 from WhoScored, making him the fifth-highest-rated player in the league.

Looking back over the 2013/14 season, Toure earned himself an overall rating of 7.55/10, which, again, is close to Foden.

With all of that taken on board, it’s understandable why Foden’s prolific campaign has reminded Onuoha of Toure.
