N.J. man to serve 23 years for fatal shooting

A Plainfield man was sentenced Thursday to 23 years in state prison for the shooting death of a 50-year-old man two years ago.

Haneef Welch, 34, fatally shot Eric Williams, of Plainfield, on a city street, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel said in a statement.

Police were called shortly before 4 p.m. on March 11, 2022, to the intersection of Johnston Avenue and East 2nd Street in Plainfield, where they found Williams had been shot multiple times. Williams was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Welch was originally charged with first-degree murder, and two second-degree weapons offenses.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and must serve 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“While this sentencing does not bring Mr. Williams back, we hope it comes as some small solace to his loved ones,” Daniel said in a statement.
