Why Crystal Palace will receive £5m after Southampton reached Championship Play-Off final

Crystal Palace will receive a financial boost after Southampton joined Leeds in the Championship Play-Off final.

The Saints overcame West Brom on Friday by a 3-1 scoreline to book their place at Wembley, after Leeds also earned a shot at an immediate return to the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Norwich on Thursday.

So, why will this land Crystal Palace millions of pounds? Let’s take a look…

Crystal Palace set to bank over £5m

Interestingly, it is related to parachute payments.

Given the fact that two of the three relegated sides will now definitely be playing Premier League football again next season alongside Ipswich, the Premier League have saved £103m in parachute payments.

Therefore – instead of pocketing this money – the Premier League will distribute it evenly between all 20 clubs involved in the 2024/25 campaign, meaning each side are set to receive £5.15m shortly.

That is according to Nathan Judah of The Express And Star.

Of course, this is – relatively – a fairly small amount of money for a Premier League side nowadays.

For example, Crystal Palace are set to bank £28m if the Eagles finish the season in the current position of 12th on Sunday.

However, as the Premier League clamp down on Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) – handing out points deductions to Everton and Nottingham Forest this season after breaches – this £5.15m should allow for more wriggle room in the summer transfer window, at least.

Depending on how things materialise in the summer, this £5.15m could well be the difference between us needing to make a sale or not.

To provide some context, Nottingham Forest were deducted four points after exceeding their permitted losses by £34.5m this season – although it still would have been a breach of the rules if that figure was just £2m, for example.

Therefore, this welcome chunk of cash could potentially be the difference between us having to sell a key man this summer – only time will tell what happens for certain.
