Ex-Spurs gem & 16-goal 'threat': 3 players Sheffield Wednesday should target after play-off final - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday could benefit from Bolton Wanderers’ defeat in the League One play-off final.

Bolton finished third in League One this season, but an underwhelming performance at Wembley yesterday meant they narrowly missed out on promotion.

Wanderers are one of the biggest clubs in the third tier and therefore have one of the strongest squads, but their failure to get past the play-offs for the second season in a row means they could now lose some key players.

A number of Championship clubs will be eagerly looking at some of their biggest stars and could try to snap them up following this weekend’s disappointment.

Wednesday could also take advantage of their misery and look to bolster their own squad in the process.

Here are three Bolton players that Sheffield Wednesday could now target…

Josh Dacres-Cogley

The full-back netted three goals and provided six assists, as well as blocking the second-most passes in the third tier (56).

While Pol Valentin has become a fans’ favourite in the second half of the season, Dacres-Cogley could add some much-needed competition to the squad.

Transfermarkt values the 28-year-old at just over £250,000, while his contract will expire next summer.

Paris Maghoma

Maghoma joined Bolton on loan from Brentford at the start of the season and has been a key player in their promotion push, netting eight goals and providing five assists.

The former Tottenham Hotspur academy gem was named Bolton’s Young Player of the Year, while manager Ian Evatt previously made it clear that they would like to sign him permanently.

Their failure to win promotion means clubs elsewhere could look to snap him up from Brentford though.

Dion Charles

The striker has scored 33 goals over the last two seasons for Bolton, having joined for £320,000 in 2022.

Charles has caught the eye of the likes of Stoke, Watford, Hull City and Swansea City, and could now earn his move to the Championship this summer.

The increasing interest in the 28-year-old ‘threat‘ could push up his price-tag though, while he only put pen to paper on a new deal at the start of the campaign.
