'He's been outstanding': Ange Postecoglou says £17m Tottenham player has been absolutely brilliant this season

Ange Postecoglou says a Tottenham player who’s been ‘outstanding’ this season can still improve.

It’s been a rocky end to the season for Spurs but all things considered, it’s been a successful one with plenty of progression.

Postecoglou has completely reinvented the style of play and returned the club back to European football after a one-season absence.

The North Londoners finished in fifth, just two points of the top four, so the natural step now will be to attain a Champions League spot next term.

Ange Postecoglou says Guglielmo Vicario had an ‘outstanding’ season

Speaking after Tottenham’s 3-0 win at Sheffield United, Postecoglou hailed Guglielmo Vicario but noted he still has gears to go through in his game.

“I think that’s important to note, I said that a couple of weeks ago, I have a lot of guys who have just broken into the Premier League like Micky, and Destiny and Vic, even guys like Pape, this is their first full season and it’s a credit to them the way they have performed,” the 58-year-old said.

“Vic has been outstanding, he has been a great addition to our football club, not just as a player but as a person and I know there’s more in him. That’s the exciting bit.”

Guglielmo Vicario statistics

Vicario’s statostcs for the season make for very impressive reading.

The 27-year-old ranks in the top five per cent for defensive actions outside of the penalty area compared to his positional peers across the big five leagues, according to FBref.

That evinces just how effective he is at playing the sweeper-keeper role and he also sits in the top 11 per cent for post-shot expected goals – amplifying his excellent shot-stopping.

FBref data also suggest that he is of a similar profile to Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer – which is glowing praise indeed.

As Postecoglou alluded to, the £17m summer signing still has room to develop, which is a pretty exciting prospect for Spurs fans.
