Player sold by Crystal Palace in 2020 now wins Golden Boot ahead of Jude Bellingham and Robert Lewandowski

As the league seasons around Europe conclude, one former Crystal Palace player has won the Golden Boot in Spain.

Crystal Palace have been free-scoring of late with a 5-0 win over Aston Villa proving just that, weeks after the 4-0 demolition of Manchester United.

This attacking improvement has seen Jean-Philippe Mateta among the goals more often than ever before and he ended the season with 19 goals and five assists, which is a superb tally.

Mateta scoring so many goals has left us wondering just how well one former Palace striker would’ve done under Oliver Glasner, as he’s just won the La Liga Golden Boot.

Alexander Sorloth outscored two world-class players this season in Spain

At Palace, there’s no debating that Alexander Sorloth was a complete flop as he failed to score a single Premier League goal in 16 goals over two seasons.

However, since then he’s bounced around Europe scoring pretty consistently everywhere. But now he’s just had arguably the best season of his career.

Sorloth has won the La Liga Golden Boot aware for this season after scoring 23 goals this season, along with also making six assists.

La Liga Golden Boot final rankings

This is quite the tally as he averaged a goal every 108 minutes for Villarreal. This is done so in a team which finished eighth and wasn’t exactly an attacking force, finishing with a goal difference of zero.

To see a Palace reject go on to shine like this makes us wonder just how terrible a job in coaching the attack Roy Hodgson did.

Sorloth could’ve been a different animal under Oliver Glasner

We’ve witnessed already this season just how big of a difference Glasner has made to Mateta. The Frenchman has scored double his previous Premier League tally for Palace.

So with the improvement Glasner has impacted on Sorloth, it’d be interesting to see if he’d also have that effect on Sorloth whom Palace sold in 2020.

Palace are believed to be in the market this summer for a striker to support Mateta and potentially replace him in the event Juventus’ interest leads to a move.

Sorloth returning to Selhurst Park could be an interesting move from the club, and under Glasner, we’re inclined to believe it’ll be a success.
