Wolves trio make Portugal Euro 2024 squad, one star misses out, Ruben Neves and Nunes decisions also made

Three Wolves players have been named in the Portugal squad for Euro 2024 – but one Molineux star has surprisingly missed out on a selection.

The 2023/24 Premier League season concluded on Sunday, with Wolves losing their final game of the campaign against Liverpool at Anfield.

Wanderers lost 2-0, with goals coming from Alexis MacAllister and Jarell Quansah.

It meant Wolves finished in 14th place in the table, with Fulham moving into 13th after they beat Luton Town.

With the season now done, attention for a lot of players will turn to Euro 2024, with many hoping to feature in the tournament in Germany.

Wolves will have a few representatives in the Portugal squad – but one star has sadly not made the cut…

Today, Roberto Martinez has named his squad for Euro 2024 and three Wolves players are in.

Jose Sa makes it, having finished the 2023/24 season fairly strongly for Wolves – against Liverpool on Sunday he made 11 saves, with one really impressing Ben Foster.

Nelson Semedo enjoyed a great campaign overall, and was named Players’ Player of the Season. He’s in, and will look to add to his 28 caps.

And finally, Pedro Neto has been included which will definitely be very satisfying for him. Neto missed Euro 2020 because of injury and also the 2022 World Cup.

He ay have been nervous ahead of this summer after suffering two hamstring injuries. But thankfully his form was so good when he did play that he’s made it in.

Sadly, there is no place for defender Toti Gomes, despite him being greatly admired by Roberto Martinez. Toti’s form dipped towards the end of the campaign, and that has seemingly counted against him.

It is a real shame for Toti who is arguably one of Wolves’ unsung heroes of 2023/24 for the impact he had when Gary O’Neil changed the system.

There are also no places in the squad for loan players Daniel Podence and Goncalo Guedes.

Ruben Neves included, but Matheus Nunes overlooked

Martinez has also made decisions today on two players who left Wolves for big money last summer.

Former captain Ruben Neves has made it into the squad. Eyebrows were raised when he made his move to Saudi Arabia, with some concerned about how that would affect his international standing. But he’s got the nod, after impressing enough across his 46 appearances for Al-Hilal.

But one man who’s missed out is Matheus Nunes, which will be a cause for satisfaction for some Wolves fans who did not appreciate how he left the club last summer.

Nunes joined Manchester City after going on strike to force a move from Wolves. In his first term at the Etihad Stadium, Nunes has made 29 appearances but has struggled for starts.

As a result of his lack of game time, he will be watching Euro 2024 from home this summer.
