‘Risky move’: Glen Johnson says Liverpool fans could turn on £40m player if he signs

The transfer window is just around the corner, and Liverpool are at the centre of a number of rumours.

With a new manager and a new transfer team in place, Liverpool are being linked with all sorts of potential targets, and one player who has been linked recently is Anthony Gordon.

Speaking to Squawka, Glen Johnson has been discussing the idea of Gordon going to Liverpool after coming through the Everton academy, and he’s claimed that this could be a risky move for Gordon as fans could quickly turn on him if he doesn’t perform.

Anthony Gordon to Liverpool a risky move

Johnson shared his verdict on the £40m man potentially coming to Anfield.

“First of all, like anything in football, if he performs they won’t care where he’s come from, but if he doesn’t they’ll soon jump on his back. So for him, it’d definitely be a risky move, but not if he’s confident in what he can deliver,” Johnson said.

“If he performs, he’d win the fans over. I think he’s a good player, he’s had a great season, I guess the concerns would be that Newcastle would probably want double what they paid for him. So whether he’s that good, I don’t know. But he’s certainly a player that I think would excite Liverpool fans if you took away the Everton situation.”

Anthony Gordon would need to impress

Johnson is right, Anthony Gordon would be fighting something of an uphill battle if he came to Liverpool.

The winger is a brilliant player, but as an Everton academy product, Liverpool supporters won’t be immediately sold on him.

Of course, after a few good performances, he’d have The Kop behind him in no time, but if he’s slow to start, fans will be quick to demand more.

Gordon might be best off staying at Newcastle and developing in a more stable environment after a fantastic season at St James’ Park.
