The 31-year-old, of Chapel Street, Thatcham, is accused of driving a BMW M3 on Bartholomew Street, Newbury, after drinking more than the legal limit.

Tests are said to have shown 79mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system - more than double the legal limit of 35mcg.

In addition Mr Smith is said to have assaulted both Simon Catt and Thomas Kingston by beating them in Newbury.

All the offences were said to have been committed on November 23 last year.

Mr Smith, who was legally represented at the hearing by Beth Vaughan, spoke only to confirm his details and to plead not guilty to all charges.

He was told the case could proceed no further that day and would be adjourned for a trial to be arranged.

Mr Smith was meanwhile released on unconditional bail.
