'Close...': BBC reporter shares major update on Danny Rohl's Sheffield Wednesday contract as talks near end

There’s been another huge update on the future of manager Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri appears to be working tirelessly on securing the future of Danny Rohl.

Rohl, 35, has earned plaudits throughout the footballing world for his impressive turnaround at Sheffield Wednesday.

He arrived in October 2023 and eventually steered the club to a 20th place finish in the Championship, despite the Owls being winless in their first 13 games of the season.

Since, clubs have begun to take notice of former Bayern Munich and Germany no.2 Rohl, with Hull City and Sunderland linked.

But Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to extend his current contract, which expires at the end of next season.

Numerous reports have revealed that talks between Chansiri and Rohl have moved along positively, but now there’s another, major update on the matter.

Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl ‘close to an agreement’

BBC journalist Rob Staton has revealed on X that Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday are now ‘close to an agreement’, after Rohl met with Chansiri in London.

Staton adds that negotiations between the pair are in the ‘final stages’ now, after Staton previously revealed that a new deal for Rohl would mean ‘adjustments’ to the compensation fee.

It was widely revealed beforehand that any club wanting to hire Rohl this summer would have to pay £5million in compensation.

And any club wanting Rohl and his backroom team would need to pay £10million in compensation.

Wait is almost over for Sheffield Wednesday

For Sheffield Wednesday and Chansiri, finalising a new and longer-term contract for Rohl may have been the key priority this summer.

And with a new deal now seemingly close, it means Sheffield Wednesday can press on with other matters, like transfers and player contracts.

Chansiri of course deserves praise for first of all entering into talks with Rohl, and secondly for finalising a deal so soon.

Of course, nothing is signed yet, but Staton’s latest update suggests that Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday are definitely close to agreeing new terms.

That could prompt a lot of Sheffield Wednesday players into committing their futures to the club and it could also help the Owls attract a lot of new players during the summer transfer window.

All in all, a new contract for Rohl is a huge plus for Sheffield Wednesday, and one with many potentially positive knock-on effects.
