Liverpool achieved something during the 23/24 season which only Chelsea have beaten before

Liverpool ultimately fell short in the 2023/24 Premier League title race, with Manchester City clinching the trophy.

Pep Guardiola’s side finished in first place with 91 points, two ahead of Arsenal in second and nine ahead of the Reds in third.

Injuries and a handful of simply disastrous results saw the Merseyside club fade away in the end, much to the disappointment of the Anfield faithful.

Importantly, however, there is plenty to look forward to next season, not least a return to the Champions League.

There is also the small matter of a new manager, with Feyenoord’s Arne Slot coming in to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool follow in Chelsea’s footsteps

The new man in the dugout has a lot of hard work ahead of him to really win over the Liverpool fans, but there is one area that he can focus on in particular to do just that.

It involves playing attacking, entertaining football, and fortunately he has been handed a massive headstart given how the Reds approached matches in the 2023/24 campaign.

As per OptaJoe, Liverpool had 790 shots in the competition, the third-most by a team on record, which is from 2003/04 onwards.

Only Chelsea, in 2008/09 (797) and 2009/10 (834) have managed more in a single Premier League season.

What does Arne Slot need to change?

The huge total is perhaps mixed news for Slot, who will initially be delighted that his players are well used to having a go at goal.

At the same time, however, the Reds finished third in the Premier League, which clearly means there is a lot of room for improvement.

Poor defensive displays were part of the problem last time out and is an area that Slot must address, with Liverpool keeping just two clean sheets throughout the entire campaign.

But making sure his attackers are much more clinical in the final third must also be a priority, with Manchester City (96) and Arsenal (91) both outscoring the Reds (86).

After Mohamed Salah’s 18, the goals were shared among the likes of Darwin Nunez (11), Diogo Jota (10), and Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo (eight).

The figures mean that Slot could be forced to turn to the transfer market to sign an out-and-out striker, or else work extremely hard on finishing on the training ground.

Although it will undoubtedly be difficult, the former option may be the only one if Salah departs this summer. Liverpool are set to demand in excess of £100million from Saudi clubs for his sale.

Nunez though will certainly need to be put through his paces, with the Uruguayan missing 27 big chances last season, as per the official Premier League website.
