'Absolutely massive': Journalist explains what Sheffield Wednesday's transfer business now 'rests on'

Joe Crann believes Sheffield Wednesday’s summer now ‘rests on’ one ‘absolutely massive’ thing.

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed an excellent 2024 for the most part, losing only seven of their 21 games in the Championship since the turn of the year.

Despite leaving it until their final three games to climb out of the relegation zone, the Owls survived the drop by three points.

It now means that their summer will look completely different to how it would have been had they found themselves in League One.

However, it could still depend on one thing, and that is Danny Rohl staying at the club.

There has been talk for months of clubs elsewhere wanting to snap up the German coach, with Sunderlandexpressing interest since they sacked Michael Beale in February.

However, Wednesday fans have been given more good news recently, with reports claiming that Rohl isnow ‘close’ to signing a new contract.

It was expected that the 35-year-old could leave the club if he wasn’t made promises about upgrades to the training facilities, a new addition to his coaching staff and also more transfer funds this summer.

It now looks like Dejphon Chansiri is prepared to meet his demands, with Rohl set to extend his stay at Hillsborough.

Danny Rohl’s position is ‘absolutely massive’

It is brilliant news for Wednesday, while journalist Joe Crann believes the success of their summer window ‘rests on’ Rohl’s contract situation.

He wrote on X: “Obviously all the caveats with Danny Röhl – it’s not done until it’s done etc etc But if #SWFC do finalise a long-term deal it’s absolutely massive. Not just because of Danny, but also for renewals, targets and more going forward. The success of the summer rests on it, IMHO.”

The difference between Rohl staying and going

It is believed that Rohl has another 12 months on his current contract, so even if he stayed this season, there would still be plenty of doubt around his future.

If things didn’t go as planned next term, then he could easily be swooped up and leave Hillsborough.

However, a lengthy new contract would add a lot of security to the club and the players.

Josh Windass has already admitted his new deal could depend on whether Rohl is still at the club, and that could be a similar situation to many of the players who are currently in talks.

Without Rohl, it is unclear whether Wednesday would end up in another relegation battle. However, there is plenty of confidence that he can take them much further than that if he stays.

The Owls are likely to keep hold of many of their current players if he signs a new contract, while the club will be a lot more tempting to join with Rohl at the helm too.

He could well be the difference between staying up and even fighting for the play-offs.
