Report: Brentford now want to sign Liverpool's £20m player this summer

Liverpool have a number of talented young players who have been shining this season.

The likes of Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah have made real names for themselves in the Liverpool first-team this term, while another young defender has been brilliant out on loan.

Indeed, Sepp van den Berg has been starring for Mainz out on loan in Germany, and now, he’s set to return to Liverpool.

Unfortunately for Van den Berg, competition for places at centre-half is rife at Anfield right now, and his next move could be a permanent departure from Anfield.

According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, there is plenty of interest in Van den Berg heading into the summer.

Brentford interested in Sepp Van den Berg

According to Pearce, Liverpool have put a £20m pricetag on the young Dutchman’s head and Brentford are amongst the clubs interested in signing him.

This report states that Southampton and Wolfsburg are also keen on the defender.

£20m would represent a substantial profit on Van den Berg after signing him for just £4m a few years ago.

In a time where Profit and Sustainability rules are biting hard, this windfall would be welcomed at Liverpool.

Liverpool need to be clever with Van den Berg

£20m would be a very good fee for Van den Berg, but Liverpool do need to add in extra provisions to make sure this isn’t a deal they ultimately regret doing.

Van den Berg is a player with a lot of potential, and if he ends up fulfilling that potential, Liverpool will end up with egg on their faces if they receive just £20m for him.

A buy-back clause or a sell-on clause would be a good way to circumvent those sorts of issues, and that’s exactly the type of deal Michael Edwards should be looking at doing if he is to sell Van den Berg this summer.
