Singer says she may have 'brain damage' from costume she wore while in disguise on-stage

Macy Gray starred as the sea queen on The Masked Singer: Australia, but it’s been claimed she suffered from brain damage as a result of the helmet from her extravagant costume.

The singer told KISS FM’s The Kyle and Jackie O show on Tuesday, wearing the heavy mask on The Masked Singer show was very difficult, joking that it “may have given her brain damage”.

Macy Gray on The Masked Singer

Macy Gray was unmasked as the sea queen during the 2023 season of The Masked Singer. She later came back to Australia in 2021 for season three, dressed as Atlantis.

It was her second appearance on the franchise, having performed as Sea Queen on the American version of the show. But it was during her first stint that she wasn’t keen on taking her Atlantis mask off.

Judges like Nicole Scherzinger correctly guessed who she was due to her vocals and clues. She sang I Try in one of her performances and was unveiled as the sea queen during the season 10 finale.

Now, Macy Gray has joked how her costume on The Masked Singer: Australia may have given her brain damage. Despite this, she refused to take hers off and wanted to stay in the competition for longer.

“They are so heavy and they are heavy on your head. I could have brain damage and I wouldn’t know,” she told hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson of her huge costume helmet.

Jackie, who was a judge on the show, agreed with the singer, adding: “I tried on one of those masks backstage and I couldn’t believe how heavy they were.”

She ‘refused to leave’ the contest

Macy had outright refused to leave The Masked Singer: Australia despite being told it was time to take off her mask and say goodbye. When she had to take it off, she threw herself on the ground in protest.

One of the show’s judges, Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, said at the time how Macy had “refused to leave” despite being told it was time to take off her mask and say goodbye to the series.

“She said ‘No, I’m continuing in the show,’ and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, ‘No, you have to leave.’ She said, ‘No, I’m not leaving.’,” he said on 2Day FM’s Morning Crew.

“The thing is, we can’t do the end of the show unless the head comes off,” Hughes added. She kept saying she was keeping the head on, but eventually had to give in to the bosses.
