Sheffield Wednesday in three-pronged striker tussle, but fresh injury update could prompt a change in course - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday are currently locked in a battle to sign three different strikers.

Among a other things; a new goalkeeper, some more youth in certain positions and whatnot, Sheffield Wednesday desperately need to sign at least one new striker this summer.

As things stand, the only out and out strikers available to Danny Rohl ahead of next season are Bailey Cadamarteri, Michael Smith, and Mallik Wilks.

The likes of Ashley Fletcher and Lee Gregory have now left, along with Ike Ugbo who the Owls are keen to re-sign this summer.

Another striker on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar is Mika Biereth; the Arsenal man shone for Sturm Graz on loan after the Owls missed out on a January loan deal.

Duncan McGuire is another name who Rohl wanted in January but who Sheffield Wednesday eventually missed out on; the Owls are also keen to revisit interest in McGuire this summer.

Duncan McGuire injury latest at Orlando City

McGuire has started the 2024 MLS season in fine form for Orlando City, having scored five goals in 12 league appearances so far.

But the 23-year-old missed the last outing vs Columbus Crew owing to a shoulder injury sustained in the game prior to that.

Now, journalist Mike Gramajo has revealed that McGuire has travelled with the Orlando City squad to face Chicago Fire on Thursday morning in UK time, and that he’s also in the squad to face New York Red Bulls this weekend.

McGuire then appears to be closing in on a hasty return to action after his injury scare, and it could prompt some new thinking from those at Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday handed Duncan McGuire boost

Sheffield Wednesday may have been keeping tabs on Biereth since January, though links only emerged in the media following the news of McGuire’s injury at Orlando City.

So it could suggest that the Owls were fearing a serious injury for McGuire, but now that it appears McGuire’s injury isn’t a serious one, it could open the club’s striker search wide open.

Now, Rohl has three names on his radar; Ugbo, McGuire, and Biereth, with Sheffield Wednesday likely to have many others on their radar that we don’t yet know of.

With McGuire having started this season well, he could be a good option to come in later in the summer and be able to hit the ground running at the start of next season.

That’s providing that he’s not snapped up by anyone else and that he makes a hasty return to action and to scoring form as well.

Ugbo’s situation still seems slightly unclear, and so too does Biereth’s; reports in Austria though claim that Sturm Graz are unlikely to re-sign the striker due to interest from England.

Which of the three strikers Sheffield Wednesday sign this summer, if any, remains to be seen. But McGuire’s injury appearing to be not so serious may certainly impact on the search.
