James Maddison says Tottenham have a player with absolutely no weaknesses

James Maddison claims he’s yet to spot a weakness in one of his Tottenham Hotspur teammates.

Maddison is one of a host of Tottenham players who have enjoyed an encouraging debut season at Spurs.

The Englishman arrived from Leicester City last summer and hit the ground running under Ange Postecoglou.

Despite a dip in form following an ankle injury, Maddison looks set to play a key role under the Aussie boss moving forward.

It’s fair to say that Postecoglou’s signings have impressed so far and one addition who has dramatically improved the starting XI is Micky van de Ven.

The 22-year-old scooped Tottenham’s Player of the Season award in his debut campaign after striking up an excellent partnership with vice-captain Cristian Romero.

Now, Maddison has been speaking to talkSPORT [28/05 5:11pm] and was full of praise for the Dutchman.

What Maddison has said about Micky van de Ven

“He is rapid, he is absolutely rapid,” the Spurs star said of Van de Ven. “I actually said to him as well when he came in, not straightaway obviously, but after a little bit, I said, I didn’t realise how good he was and how fast he was, ‘You know what? I had never heard of you’.

“I had never heard of Micky van de Ven. I would never say that at the start, but once I realised he was a top player, I couldn’t believe we had signed this centre-back that I was seeing.

“I was thinking, ‘Right then, what’s his weakness?’ He is good on the ball, he is good in the air, he is tall, he is strong, he is rapid. And, I am thinking, ‘Where’s the weakness then?’ And, to be fair, I am still looking.”

Van de Ven’s first season at Tottenham in numbers

Van de Ven’s importance to Postecoglou’s side has quickly become apparent after his switch from Wolfsburg last summer.

The Dutchman’s pace is vital to Spurs’ brave attacking approach and he’s often the last line of defence for Postecoglou’s men.

Despite a hamstring injury leaving him sidelined between November and January, Van de Ven racked up 27 appearances in the Premier League.

  • 27 appearances
  • 3 goals
  • 5 clean sheets
  • 49 tackles
  • 71% tackle success
  • 4 last man tackles
