Sheffield Wednesday loan man officially released by parent club ahead of the 2024/25 season

A player who spent the 2023/24 season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday has now been released.

Sheffield Wednesday certainly had a mixed bag with their loan signings in the 2023/24 season.

In total, the Owls signed nine players on loan; John Buckley, Momo Diaby, Ashley Fletcher, Jeff Hendrick, and Devis Vasquez all joined last summer, whilst James Beadle, Kristian Pedersen, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo joined in the winter window.

In the end, it was January arrivals Beadle, Poveda, and Ugbo who helped make the difference for Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday eventually finished in 20th place of the Championship table after winning their final three games of the season, in which Beadle and Ugbo shone.

Poveda missed the final few weeks of the season through injury, though Rohl is keen for all of Beadle, Poveda, and Ugbo to return to S6 this summer.

And now, one of the Owls’ loan players from the season just concluded has officially been released.

Jeff Hendrick released by Newcastle United

Hendrick, 32, leaves Newcastle United after four seasons. In that time, the 79-cap Republic of Ireland international made just 25 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.

Former Burnley and Derby County man Hendrick spent the last two-and-a-half seasons of his Newcastle contract out on loan, spending time with QPR, Reading, and then Sheffield Wednesday.

But Hendrick would only feature 11 times for the Owls in the 2023/24 Championship campaign owing to injuries and simply being out of contention under Rohl.

Hendrick’s highlight from his time in S6 was scoring a late equaliser in a memorable 1-1 draw vs Leicester City in November.

Will Sheffield Wednesday return for Jeff Hendrick this summer

Hendrick arrived as a fairly steady loan signing for the Owls, albeit an underwhelming one, and a seemingly desperate one on deadline day of the last summer transfer window.

And whilst he showed the odd glimpse of his Premier League and international level ability, overall, he was poor for Sheffield Wednesday.

Now with Rohl clearing the decks and looking to usher in the next generation of much younger Owls players, a return for Hendrick this summer looks highly unlikely.

That, and because Hendrick was likely on very high wages at Newcastle United; SalarySport claim that Hendrick earned a staggering £50,000-a-week at St James’ Park.

So Hendrick will undoubtedly have to take a pay cut with his next club, whoever that might be. But expect there to be plenty of Football League teams ready to take a punt on the experienced midfielder.
