Liverpool chasing PL defender Pochettino tipped to be one of the greatest centre-backs in England - journalist

Arne Slot is already laying out his transfer plans for Liverpool for the summer window.

Slot is expected to begin work in earnest this weekend as his contract with the Reds comes into effect.

And there’s no time to waste. Although it’s early days in the transfer market, Euro 2024 will interrupt things ahead of the new season. Liverpool reportedly want signings in sooner rather than later.

If they’re to do that, then Slot needs to ramp up activity as soon as he’s through the door at the AXA Training Centre.

Aided by Richard Hughes and of course Michael Edwards, the new head coach will have the tools to shape his first Liverpool squad with one or two additions. And according to overnight reports on Wednesday, Slot is already laying some groundwork on an exciting talent.

Liverpool chasing Levi Colwill signing

It would be wrong to say that major surgery is needed for Liverpool this summer. However, one or two additions are still necessary.

At least one of those looks likely to be at centre-back. The Reds haven’t made a signing in the position since 2021.

Reports this week have claimed that Liverpool have now narrowed their choice down to two players: Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie.

Both are fine defenders and would surely be handy additions for Slot. But it seems that there’s still one defender Liverpool would like above all else.

Levi Colwill was very heavily linked with a move to Anfield throughout last summer. In the end that didn’t happen. But according to journalist Kieran Gill on X, Liverpool still haven’t given up on the dream of snatching Colwill from Chelsea.

“Liverpool like Levi Colwill – Arne Slot is chasing a versatile left-footed defender – but Chelsea want 21-year-old academy graduate to stay this summer,” Gill reports.

“Contracted until 2029 with option of a further year.”

Is Levi Colwill a possibility for Liverpool?

Here we go again. You simply couldn’t keep Colwill and Liverpool apart during last year’s window. There was a point where it genuinely felt possible, too.

In the end, the 21-year-old ended speculation by signing a new deal. Or so we thought.

If Liverpool are still maintaining their interest in Colwill even after he extended his stay at Stamford Bridge, they obviously think there’s a chance at getting him.

You can see why they’d be interested. Ahead of the season Mauricio Pochettino claimed that the youngster could be one of the ‘greatest centre-backs in England’ [Sky Sports].

Although injury disrupted the second half of his season, Colwill still showed his quality in 2023/24.

In our opinion, the England international could be an ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk. However, unless something dramatically changes, we still don’t see how this realistically gets done.
