Report: Steven Gerrard set to sign another former Celtic treble hero

Transfer talk seems to be the order of the day for the Celtic fans as the club looks to build for the upcoming season ahead.

No sooner had the Scottish Cup been lifted at Hampden than the rumours began about Brendan Rodgers looking to strengthen and trim the squad.

We discussed already this morning how the Celtic boss is looking to offload eight players this summer. We also talked about how Simon Donnelly rubbished the source spreading the latest Kyogo Furuhashi rumour.

So the news is coming thick and fast except this one really doesn’t have an impact for Celtic on a club level.

Steven Gerrard now wants Celtic icon Jota

Every time I think of Jota my heart sinks a little bit, for two reasons. The Portuguese winger was an absolute hero to the Celtic support in his two seasons at the club.

His trickery on the wing and his ability to tear defences apart made him a huge fan favourite. He discovered some superb form at Celtic which put him on the cusp of international recognition.

He also had an incredible bond with the Celtic support and seemed to be really settled in Glasgow. Until the money of Al-Ittihad came calling.

£25m later and a bumper contract, Jota was gone but it’s not been the best of times for him at his new club.

His troubles at Al-Ittihad have been well documented but now, it seems that Steven Gerrard is set to end his time at the club after the Daily Record reported that the former Rangers manager is looking to take Jota on loan to Al-Ettifaq.

The Portuguese winger will be Gerrard’s third treble-winning Celtic signing after he took Jack Hendry and Moussa Dembele to the club last summer.

The irony is not lost on me that Gerrard has preferred to sign former Celtic stars whilst ignoring the players who won him his first title as the Rangers manager.

Part of me has always wished that Jota would find his way back to Celtic. Part of me still hopes that it could still happen.

But I, like thousands of other Celtic fans, will need to accept that whilst Saudi clubs are willing to pay or match his current salary, a potential return of Jota on the wing is simply not going to happen.
