Tottenham now set to trigger contract extension for £22m player after securing Timo Werner loan

Tottenham Hotspur are now looking to secure the future of one of their top players this summer having sealed their first deal of the summer.

With the summer transfer window still a couple of weeks away from opening, Tottenham have already announced Timo Werner will return to the club for next season.

Ange Postecoglou is looking to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign with a focus on improving the quality of the options at his disposal.

The Australian’s first season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has already produced a fifth-placed finish which will have Spurs playing more frequently next term with Europa League football.

Remaining competitive over the course of the season will require squad rotation which is why the likes of Werner will be signed this summer.

But it seems as if Spurs are also looking to get one in-house deal over the line at Hotspur Way to secure the future of one of their current players.

Ange Postecoglou wants to secure future of £22m Tottenham player

The 2023/24 campaign in north London has seen a lot of improvement on the previous term under Antonio Conte.

And that comes without the club’s record goalscorer Harry Kane who departed last summer after Daniel Levy sanctioned his sale to Bayern Munich.

The England captain’s departure from Spurs has seen the remaining forwards have to fill a void of 30 Premier League goals left behind from last season.

Heung-min Son was the main man to take up that responsibility with Richarlison picking up numerous injuries over the course of the term.

The £22m South Korean captain is going into this summer with just one-year remaining on his deal in north London.

And The Athletic are now reporting that Spurs are set to trigger the extension clause in the 31-year-old’s deal to extend his stay until 2026.

Son enjoyed one of his best campaigns yet in the Premier League with a return of 17 goals and 10 assists in the league alone.

Having ended the campaign as the club’s top scorer, it seems there is no desire for Spurs to move on from Son any time soon.

Tottenham need to manage Heung-min Son next season

Although the 31-year-old enjoyed one of his best campaigns of his career last season, it has to be admitted that he tailed off over the final weeks of the campaign.

Statistics via Transfermarkt.

Son may have had to play in the Asian Cup with South Korea over January, but Spurs only played one game more than the bare minimum without European football.

The new Europa League format means more games for Spurs than usual and that will require Tottenham to manage the fitness of Son.

Options behind the South Korean will be needed and the signing of Werner will prove useful in rotating Son in the lesser games that may come in the cup competitions.
