George Byers can do Sheffield Wednesday one final favour and help Rohl sign Ligue 1 gem this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday have a new name on their transfer radar.

Sheffield Wednesday have finally secured the future of manager Danny Rohl, who’s now penned a three-year deal with the Owls.

For owner Dejphon Chansiri, it’ll be a relief, and it also means that he and the club can press on with their summer transfer plans.

It promises to be a hectic summer in S6. New signings are needed across the pitch and Sheffield Wednesday have been tipped to spend money on the right players.

So far though, the Owls are being linked with a number of free transfers and loan deals, with several names coming onto their radar in the last few weeks.

Rohl wants all of James Beadle, Ike Ugbo, and Ian Poveda back, whilst January targets Duncan McGuire and Mika Biereth are back in their sights.

Elsewhere, free agent Ovie Ejaria has been linked, along with Brest talent Karamoko Dembele.

How George Byers can help secure Karamoko Dembele at Sheffield Wednesday

Dembele, 21, is being linked with a loan move to Sheffield Wednesday this summer, following his impressive spell at Blackpool last season.

The former Celtic man recorded 23 goal contributions in all competitions and scooped three Player of the Season awards with Blackpool.

And it was Bloomfield Road where Byers was sent out on loan himself in the January of this year; he fell out of favour under Rohl, but would impress with Blackpool.

Byers featured 16 times in League One and grabbed one assist, earning solid reviews during time his by the seaside, linking up well in a team with Dembele which finished the campaign strong.

Byers was a huge fan favourite in S6 but has since been released by the Owls; he was pictured in the away end at Ewood Park during Sheffield Wednesday’s all-important 3-1 win against Blackburn Rovers.

He certainly came across as someone who loved and cared for the club and if Dembele can go to anyone for a review of Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, and of the fans, it’s surely Byers.

Can Sheffield Wednesday realistically sign Karamoko Dembele this summer

Although Byers fell out of favour under Rohl, he had plenty of time playing and training under the German, and if he’s like any other Wednesday player who’s spoken out on the matter, he’ll have been impressed.

And Byers certainly had an affinity with the Sheffield Wednesday faithful, and that combined with the chance to play under Rohl, could be enough for Dembele to fancy a loan move to S6 for next season.

It would also present a step up in quality and a definite guarantee of game-time, whereas returning to Brest, who’ll be playing in the Champions League next season, may not.

There’s also Premier League clubs interested in Dembele this summer, but again, that might mean Dembele just being shipped out on loan or playing as a back-up player.

So there’s definitely reason to believe that Sheffield Wednesday can pull off an ambitious deal for Dembele this summer, and Byers could well play a behind-the-scenes role.
